The Situation analyzer enables coping with the following failure modes:

• Detecting exceptional situations, due to a hardware fault, other state change or an unexpected event
• Warning about hazard development
• Detecting situations that do not match the operational scenario
• Communicate the situation to all the system units.

Case studies

• Torrey canyon : a situation control  can be used to set the actual steering states, obtained from sensors, to generate alarms when they sensed steering does not match the steering mode
• TMI : a situation control can be used to trace the system states, and to generate alarms when they do not match the scenario set by the operators (by the Scenario analyzer ).
