In order to ensure that most of the
attention resources are allocated to the main
operators' tasks, the transition should be by
direct mapping. Therefore, the preferred method for
intention-operation transition, in terms of minimal
attention consumption, is by
direct mapping.
The worst
attention consuming method is
memory based. If the number of functions is too large, and requires
overloading controls with several functions, then the perception-based mapping is the
second-best.
Panels should be used to enable fast access to critical functions. Panels may be used for mode-independent features only
Panel controls and warning lights should be arranged in a special layout, enabling fast identification of the control or warning light by its location on the panel
risky controls should be protected against accidental activation
Warning lights should have unique features to enable fast
risk recognition.
