Direct mapping refers to the operation required to materialize an operator's intention. It means that every function has a single control allocated for execution, and its function does not depend on the system situation.
Direct mapping is essential for developing psychomotoric skills by practice. It enables seamless operation. The operators are not required to consider the system situation prior to actuating the proper control. They can allocate most of their attention for their main tasks.
The transition from operator's intention to action should be controlled, to prevent errors (unintentional actions).
