Mode-state matching

A mode set is a means provided to enable the operators to control the system behavior.

Controlling the system behavior is possible if a machine state set is associated with the mode set, in a way that enables checking if they match.

Example

The simple reactive system ... is controlled by  an On-Off switch. The states corresponding to the On-Off switch are the (Operating, Idle) engine states.

Enabling matching verification

In order that the machine state matches the operator's selection, the machine should be equipped with means to sense and report on the corresponding state.

Example

A micro-switch may be added to the engine, in order to engine design, to enable detecting situations when the actual behavior of the engine matches the operator's intention, as set by the On-Off switch.
