Conceptual mode set

A conceptual mode set is a term referring to the operators' choice about tasks or their intention.

Example

In the Torrey Canyon accident, the conceptual mode set about the top-level operation modes could consist of the modes: Navigation, Maintenance, Training, testing , etc.

Realization

A conceptual mode set can be implicit, in the mind of the operators, or explicit.

The source of many incidences is due to implicit mode sets.

Example

The Torrey Canyon accident followed an exceptional scenario, which was ambiguous because the primary mode set was implicit.
