Direct access may be inconvenient for rarely operated control features, when the amount of new information is beyond the capacity of the operator's short-term memory. It is not applicable for:

• Inconsistent data presentation, when the data is the result of queries or when the location on screen is not fixed
• Occasional search, in case that the operator needs to access the control feature for the first time.

In both cases, when looking for a particular control features, the operators cannot see the forest for the trees. They might waste too much time and mental efforts in examining and evaluating many irrelevant items.
