Resilience-oriented design

This section describes the resilience-oriented considerations and activities incorporated in the design stage:

• Automation dilemma ... - the benefit of automation should be considered with regard to two operational tasks: direct control and supervision.
• HM Control design ... - the HM control dilemma is about balancing manual control with automation
• Defense development ... - the defenses against hazards are developed proactively partly in parallel
• Statistical process control ... - a method for Indirect fault detection in normal operation.
• Response design ... - the goal of response design is to determine the grace time.
• Grace time calculation ... - the time when automatic intervention is required, namely, in which the system should switch from manual control to automated
• Resilient initialization ... - a way to identify hazards that might occur when starting the system.
• Add-on selection ... - a procedure for managing the risks associated with the various solutions.
• Hazard testability ... - an example based on the design of an error-proof boiler .... To enable testability, we add an admin gate to the chart, operated by admin station.
• Operation design - operational procedures defining the sequence of state changes during the interaction, and optionally, the event that triggered these changes.
• Interaction protocols - the rules defining normal interaction between system components or between the machine and its operators
• Distraction prevention ... -  the effect of distraction on manual control. Mostly, distraction affects the performance and skill development in routine operation .
• Alarm coding ... - The requirements from the alarms regarding the alarm attributes
• Alarm perception ... - the awareness of the operators about new operational risks, affecting the way the operators respond to the alarm .
