In routine operation, automations frees the operators from physical and mental activities, enabling them to focus on supervisory tasks. However, when the operators do not have control over the system, they might not be able to respond properly in case of an exceptional situation.
Automation is required when there is a need for fast reaction, which cannot be guaranteed by manual control.
