This chart depicts an implementation of a Manual control (such as changing the position of a car gear, or changing a radio station). It is used by the operators   for setting the mode according to the operational task, such as normal, maintenance, testing, etc.

Modes are controlled manually, by the operators. This chart exemplifies explicit mode selection, a method for preventing mode confusion.

The problem of mode confusion is typical of situations in which one party is not informed properly about a change made to the other party. The goal of explicit mode setting is to ensure that each party is informed properly about changes in the mode of the other party.
