Shortcuts key combinations are used to provide fast and easy access to selected system functions. Here ... is a sample of shortcut keys used in Gmail (2010).

Example - using clipboard

Several popular text editors provide shortcut keys for using the clipboard, for cutting and copying from the text buffer to the clipboard, and for pasting the text from the clipboard to the text buffer. This feature is very useful, because the clipboard actions are used often during text editing, and the operation without the shortcut keys is often too tedious.

The risks of using shortcuts

Shortcuts are error-prone. It is easy to unintentionally miss or substitute one of the selected keys with others.

The costs of erroneous activation

Activating the wrong shortcut might be costly. For example, the results of unintentional erasing a file, or clearing the text on screen might be traumatic to the inexperienced user.

Note: the initial errors may be harmless, or recovered easily. This is the case of unintentional selection (Ctrl+A instead of Shift+A) or opening a new page (Ctrl+N instead of Shift+N). However, typically, the users are not aware of making these errors, and might be confused by the unexpected results.

The guidelines are: Do not provide shortcuts for actions that many of the users are not expected to use frequently. Provide shortcuts for those user activities that you expect that they should use frequently.
