Risk assessment

The goal of risk assessment is to set requirements for mitigating the risks.

Assessment

The activities involved in risk assessment are

• Identify the risks during operation
• Set measures and sensors for quantifying the risks
• Set thresholds for alarming about different risk levels
• Set grace time ( obtained by trend analysis) for automated intervention.

Example

Consider a boiler that should operate in a range of temperatures. Then the risk assessment should include:

• Specification of the risks of overheating and sub-heating
• Requirement for a thermometer to measure the temperature
• Requirements about how the system should behave when outside the temperature range
• Requirements about how to inform the operators about crossing the range boundaries.
• Requirements about the situations of idle operators, when and how to change to automated protection
