Resilience is defined in various ways. The Oxford English Dictionary on Historical Principles (1973)
defines Resilience as "the act of rebounding or springing back." This
definition applies to materials which return to their original shape after
deformation.
Resilience is an emergent property related to
risks of
failure, associated with several
system properties, including:
reliability,
robustness, fault-tolerance (
Wiki ), responsiveness
(Wiki ) and
recovery capability. The
system resilience affects the safety (
Wiki ),
productivity (Wiki ), maintenance (
Wiki )
costs, and the feeling of confidence of the
users and
operators in the system. System resilience is defined here as the ability of
systems to mitigate the
risks of
operating in exceptional or unpredictable
situations (
Harel and Weiss, 2011 ).
Mitigation is achieved by adapting to changing conditions, and responding appropriately after the fact (
RSWG 2014 ).
Practically, it means that the system responds gracefully to
hazards in a limited time frame, called
grace time.
