This term is defined as the probability of a system completing its expected function during an interval of time ( Wiki ).

Traditional interpretation

System failure is due to several factors, including hardware, software and human. Traditional measures of reliability, which focus on the hardware, do not represent the other factors. The extended reliability is a measure of system failure considering all the known factors.

The extended reliability is a system property, intended to account for all the factors affecting the definition above.

The case studies indicate that the key factors of the extended reliability are:

• The reliability of the hardware component
• The visibility of hazards, especially states of critical components and instances of scenario-situation mismatch.
