The recovery station is used to manage exceptional situations. It should support all the activities required to resume routine operation from exceptional situations, including alarming, troubleshooting, and recovery.

General guidelines

Assuming that the system operation does not fail often, operators do not have many opportunities to experience the system behavior in exceptional situations. Therefore, the operational style should enable easy orientation, and error prevention. This implies that:

• The effect of the situation on the functions issued by a control should be explained interactively
• Display design should rely on textual descriptions, in terms of the operators.
