Cool design uses exceptional, extreme values of design attributes. For examples:
Color selection: attractive, bold, highly saturated or psychedelic
Fonts: exceptionally curly or neat and of intriguing size
Images: bold and provocative, regardless of content
Animation and multimedia: using cutting-edge technology.
Cool design is intended to impress the audience. It is most effective for sales promotion, and it receives positive feedback from potential users and customers ... until they have to use it routinely.
In routine, cool design is disturbing. In regular usage, the same nice features that attract the attention when first viewing the system, later divert the users' focus from their main tasks. Thus users must invest more mental efforts in the system operation.
