Rule knowledge bases

To enable easy and reliable setting of the rules, they may be formalized and stored in special knowledge bases. Common knowledge bases are:

• Scenario knowledge base, defining which mode combinations are expected
• Situation knowledge base, defining which state combinations are expected in the various scenarios
• Activity knowledge base, defining which events are expected in the various situations.

Using the rules

At run time, each time a new event arrives or a system state changes, the Exception handler unit can retrieve the appropriate rule and check if the change complies with the rules. In case of violation, the Exception detector unit sends an alarm signal to the alarm unit.
