Types of HW faults
Hardware faults may be classified as either persistent or temporary.
- Persistent faults, persistent malfunction of a unit or component, such as mechanical damage or electronic mal-function. May require part replacement.
- Temporary faults, intermittent malfunction of a unit or component. Examples: contextual faults, intermittent power failure, communication faults ...: Requires analysis of the source of the fault.
Environmental faults
Fault often are due to exceptional environmental conditions. Common types of environmental faults include:
- Contextual fault, temporary malfunction due to extreme operational conditions
- Power failure
- Persistent power failure, such as due to battery replacement or poor connection
- Intermittent power failure, due to lightning or problem in the connection of the power supply
- Communication fault, in a distributed
