Testing
Testing goals
The testing objectives include
verification that:
- An alarm is generated for each hazard
- The operators perceive all the alarms
- The operators recognize the risks of new
hazards
- The system provides indication about the alarm condition as long as the
hazard exists
- The operators are aware of the alarm condition as long as the
hazard exists
- The indications about existing
hazards do not distract the
operators from critical activities, such as
troubleshooting.
Alarm generation
Testing may involve real
hazards as well as faked
hazard. Hazards should be faked to when the real
hazards are either force majeure, or to risky to handle.
Example
- Force majeure - unit failure: we can fake certain types of unit failure by turning it off, or disconnecting it.
- Risky hazards - explosive: we can generate a signal of detonation, without actual detonation.
Operator's response
The operator's response to alarms can be tested by observation in
usability testing.
