The chart illustrates a way to integrate automatic tasks with those of the operators.

Automation is presented on the left side of the chart. This is a classical control scheme, in which the machine senses the Situation, compares it to the goal, and makes automatic changes, to fill in the gap.

The operators play a Supervisor role (on the right). Based on perception of the situation, they set the goals for the automation.
