Alarm coding requirements

The requirements from the alarms are:

• They should be audible
• They should alert, shifting the operator's attention to upcoming risks
• The level of operator alert should correspond to the risks level and the grace time (as demonstrated in the chart on the left).
• They should encode information hinting about the desired operator's response.

Alarm attributes

Alarm attributes related to the risks level ( Harel, 2006 ):

• Volume - higher volume indicates higher emergency
• Pitch - higher pitch indicates higher emergency
• Frequency - high frequency indicates higher emergency
